Eating Disorder Therapy in Charlotte, NC
Your relationship with food and your body are always telling a deeper story.
It’s really common to feel that something is off with your relationship with food. Maybe you’re restricting, purging, binging, or you just feel out of control. Or maybe you’re struggling with your relationship with your own body, feeling a lot of shame for how you look, or sometimes even forgetting that you have a body. This is all fairly common.
As with most things, having trouble with your relationship with food and your body exists on a spectrum. I hear from folks on a regular basis that they wish they came to therapy for disordered eating sooner, but this belief that things weren’t “bad enough” stopped them for a long time. This doesn’t have to be the case for you.
Eating patterns are about so much more than food. Hear me say: if you can get past the shame you feel around your eating habits, the deeper story always gives us golden wisdom of what it’s like to be you.
Here are a few things I want you to know first and foremost:
Recovering from an eating disorder and disordered eating is possible.
Having a relationship with food that feels good, nourishing, and comfortable is possible.
Coming home to your own body and experiencing safety with yourself is possible.
At Fig Holistic Psychotherapy in Charlotte, NC, my goal isn’t to just help you stop doing the behaviors that are harmful, rather it’s to care for the parts of you that need to use these behaviors and strategies in the first place. This often looks like getting curious about why it was likely wise for you to stay out of your body and slowly and gently inviting you to find a new kind of relationship with your body that centers on curiosity, safety, invitation, and respect.
I use what is known as a “bottom-up approach” in our work together. This simply means we start with your body first and use the sensations that are happening inside to help illuminate the path forward towards healing and change. We’ll develop skills in session so you can develop a robust toolset to care well for yourself outside of session. I know this may sound scary at first, but the beauty of this work is that it’s done in small, bite sized chunks with lots of resourcing to help you slowly and mindfully develop the capacity to simply be in your body.
The best part of eating disorder therapy? It doesn’t stop with food- it expands to all areas of your life. And it doesn’t stop with you- it ripples out for generations to come.
I would be so honored to walk with you as you find more healing for yourself, your story, and your body.
