There is some good news in 2024: clients find virtual therapy to be just as powerful as in-person therapy. It’s more accessible and really convenient, especially if you travel or you’re a Mom of littles. If you do have worries about doing therapy virtually, these won’t be glazed over. They’ll be quite welcomed, actually.

Three Common Fears around
Virtual Therapy

You’ve likely spent a lot of time on zoom so the idea of seeing your therapist online can easily feel well…less than therapeutic. I want to cover 3 common fears of virtual therapy to help you understand it’s real different from your 3P work meeting and can greatly improve your well-being.

  • While I will always prefer being in the same room, the feedback from clients who’ve done virtual therapy is overwhelmingly positive. Actually, many people find being in the comfort of their own home to allow them to share and open up even more than they normally would in an office. Plus with your precious time not spent in traffic, you can make yourself a warm, cozy cup of tea instead. The power of therapy in your life is within you, not whether we have it in an office or through a screen.

  • How valid! One of the best parts of therapy is being able to say whatever is on your mind and heart. I’ve sat with several folks with this exact same fear. Here are a few suggestions to make sure your room is soundproof:

    • Close your door and fill the bottom opening with a blanket.

    • Turn your sound machine on by the door. Here's a link to my favorite one.

    • Plan a time for therapy when no one else is home.

    • Ask your roommates or family members to go outside or out of the house during your therapy hour.

    • Ask a friend who isn’t home during the day if you can use their space.

    • Remember: it’s harder to hear in another room than you think. :)

Also, everything we discuss in our session is completely confidential. I use a simple telehealth portal called SimplePractice that emails you a link straight to our session 24 hours before our session. (It’s easy and very uncomplicated to figure out, I promise!)

  • What about them? Anything we come across together can be a therapeutic moment. We get to use everything that happens (like having to repeat yourself if the internet goes shotty for a second - it will happen from time to time) as invitations to get to know more about your story and care for you more. Because the reality is, missed connections are far more common than we acknowledge and so much of therapy is slowing things down to talk about what it was like to be missed, what that feels like, and how you might need to be cared for in it.

Don’t let therapy being virtual be the reason you delay getting care in this season. If you’re ready to get started and you live in North Carolina, South Carolina or Texas, schedule a free 20 minute phone consultation with Blake to see if working together feels like a good fit!
